16th Avenue👔-Part 6

Olivia’s words ring out clearly.

Olivia
In line with Section 2, paragraph 3 of the Staff Handbook, dating among Staff is highly prohibited. All Staff caught in violation of this rule will be asked to resign with immediate effect.

A hand goes up.

Olivia
Janet, …you have something to say.

Janet
(withdraws her raised hand)
It’s Monday morning, to be precise, the first Monday of the last quarter of the year – an extremely busy period for the company. Some of us have a long list of clients to meet with today coupled with backlogs from Friday. I’m sure you have prepared a lovely speech filled with fancy words which would be impressive to hear but could you spare us the lecture and get to the point.

Beside Janet sits William, visibly bored out of his mind.

William
(yawns)
As much as I hate to agree with Saddam, she’s actually right. I’ve got a 9am meeting with a client at Magodo and she hates to be kept waiting.

Olivia
Alright then. I’ll wrap it up.
(shuts the Almighty Staff Handbook)
Basically, if you want to keep your jobs, kill the romance.

Janet
Done!

Olivia
And absolutely no more repeats of last Friday.

Janet
Noted.
Anything else?

Olivia
That pretty much sums it up.
Please, be guided accordingly.

Janet
Thank you.

Janet wastes no time making her way out the door. William appears behind her just in time to have the door slammed right in his face barely escaping a nose injury. He turns in his tracks towards Olivia.

William
(pissed off)
Isn’t there a company policy against hostility among staff?

Olivia
Of course, there is. It’s in the same section with the ones addressing name-calling among staff. You called her Saddam, remember?

William
This is going to be a really long day.
(loosens his tie as he marches out)
The door to the West Wing swings open and William marches out still pissed. He looks up to see a man approaching clutching unto a leather hand bag.

Stunned, William stops and stares, mouth agape. Unknowingly, his Samsung phone slips out of his hand falling to the ground and coming apart. He continues to stare in disbelief as the man draws nearer stern-faced.

William
Wilson?
I mean, good – good morning, Sir.

Wilson makes his way pass William without a glance in his direction, carelessly crushing his Samsung phone underfoot and immediately disappearing into the West Wing.

Daisy
Hi!

Kelsey
(looks up startled)
Dais’! Didn’t see you walk in.

Daisy
I noticed. You were staring so hard at your computer.
Let me guess, HR has sent that mail.

Kelsey
Yep.
I resume at the West Wing… with immediate effect.

Daisy
Na wa! They didn’t waste time.

Kelsey
At all.

Daisy
Did you hear? Your uncle’s back?

Kelsey
(Kelsey raises a brow)
What uncle have you adopted for me this time?

Daisy
Wilson!
He’s back and I hear he’s back with vengance.

Kelsey
Vengance against who?

Daisy
Everyone. He’s spitting fire at anyone who crosses his path.
Avoid him at all cost.

Kelsey
Shouldn’t he be grateful rather than pissed?

Daisy

Grateful for a two-week suspension. On what planet does that happen.

Kelsey

At least he wasn’t sacked.

(Enters Walter)

Walter
Actually, it’s worse. Much worse.
(Walter approaches the two girls with sympathy in his kind eyes.)
I guess you haven’t heard.

Kelsey
What could be worse than getting sacked?

Walter
He was demoted.

Daisy
Chaii! Thst’s bad.

Kelsey
Demotion. Didn’t see that coming.

Walter
Along with the title, he was also stripped of his official car.
It’s Management’s way of slapping him on the wrist.
Personally, I think it was intended to frustrate him into resignation.

Kelsey
Looks like it didn’t work

Walter
Not yet.
Between us, I don’t think his ego can take it.
I give it less than a year before he quits.
(a beat)
On a lighter note, how did your weekends go?

Daisy
It was just there. Was indoors all through.

Walter
You guys missed out on Friday.

Daisy
If you’re refering to Janet and William, we caught the action.

Walter
Actually, I was refering to Ashley and Tucker.

Daisy
Oh that. How did that go?

Kelsey
Did she get that dance?

Walter
(laughs heartily)
I’m not telling. You’ll have to find out yourself.

Kelsey
Does it have anything to do with why Ashley isn’t in today?

Walter
I ain’t telling.
As for why I’m here…
Kelsey, Nicholson would like to have a word with you before you resume in your new office.

Kelsey
You know about that?

Walter

(gasps pretending to be offended)
Like duh! Who do you think you’re talking to? I know everything.
Later, girls.
(Walter exits.)

Daisy
You and Nicholson have suddenly become best friends. Why do you think he wants to see you again?

Kelsey
Honestly, I’m lost too.
Before you go, can you help me pack my stuff?
Can’t believe I’m saying goodbye to this office.
